“I’ll sleep when I’m dead” is a popular quote among the ultra productive go-getters of the world. The phrase is meant to convey the idea that sleep is akin to laziness, and in order to be successful in whatever arena we desire, we have to be willing to sacrifice sleep in order to create more time. However, it turns out that this mentality can actually short

It’s Day 8 of our 30-Day Self-Care Challenge and we are moving right along. As we finish our segment on sleep, we encourage you to remember that self-care is a lifelong journey rather than a destination. We are cultivating a new mentality rather than a fleeting fad. Some days we will get it right and some days we won’t. That is where our practice to be ok wi

On day 9 of our Imperfectly Perfect Self-Care Challenge, we turn our attention to our meditation practice. Truth be told my meditation practice is a little all over the place! Just like my mind. Seriously, the biggest thing we hear about meditation is the myth that meditation is supposed to stop our thoughts. Reality check- it doesn’t. I’ve read that we have

I first turned to meditation as a means to cope with anxiety. I have landed in the hospital not once, but twice as a result of anxiety. The second time this occurred I thought I was having a heart attack and insisted on being taken to the ER, but after an EKG and several other tests, I was told that my heart was in excellent shape and that I was stressed out

Every day we bump up against challenges and obstacles. It can be frustrating, to say the least! Catch me on a day when I’ve had a full night’s sleep and I’m likely to shrug off these challenges with a cheerful attitude. Other days a minor annoyance can push me over the top! If you’ve ever seen the video of The Samurai and The Fly you can probably relate! Whe

I have a weird little pinky toe on both of my feet and I have a big gap between my big toe and my second toe. I also have a widow’s peak. You might never have noticed these genetic traits had I not pointed them out. What is it you notice about your body? I would almost bet that if I asked you to describe your body you would go for the things you didn’t like

We are nearly halfway through our Perfectly Imperfect 30 Day Self-Care Challenge! I think most of us suffer from “not enough” syndrome. We think that we’re not rich enough, skinny enough, successful enough, productive enough and the list goes on and on. Our self-care is no different. We don’t sleep enough, sit still enough, eat enough real food or exercise e

Very often the reason we find meditation practice so difficult is that getting quiet and sitting still brings up uncomfortable emotions. Emotions that we would rather not deal with. But the truth is that our emotions are stored in our body if we do not allow them to surface to be released. Today I will introduce a short meditation by Kristin Neff called Sof

Today we hit the halfway mark in our self-care challenge and the last day of our perfectly imperfect meditation practice. The benefits of meditation are many. Science now proves a whole host of benefits including: reduces blood pressure, reduces overeating, decreases stress, anxiety, and panic attacks, improves sleep, memory, mood, productivity AND it makes

Day 16 of our 30-Day Self-Care Challenge is a “perfectly imperfect” time to remind ourselves that “we are what we eat”! While there are times that it is appropriate to be as “soft” as ice cream or as “sweet” as apple pie, we must remember that too much softness can make us feel weak, and too much sweetness will eventually make us sick. This week we will focu

What’s your story? What contributes to your relationship with food? As a cheerleader in college, I was publicly weighed and my body fat percentage taken on a weekly basis. That’s because, at 142 pounds, I was considered the “fattest” cheerleader on the squad. I was scrutinized for every food decision I made, which made the act of eating or deciding what to e

In Our Self-Centered Women group, we introduce an exercise about mindful eating as an experiment to notice how much we use food as a numbing agent in exchange for feeling the feelings that cause us pain, whether from past traumas or current stressors from the demands of everyday life. The more we understand WHY we do things, the more we realize that we have

I’m not crazy!! Just…NUTS!!! Do you even understand what amazing little foods nuts are?! And they come straight from a natural source that our planet just provides for us plentifully. That, in itself, is worth revering. Today we are giving praise to the walnut. This tiny seed is known to decrease the risk of heart disease, slow cancer cell growth, and increa

@nancy_g_martin this one’s for you, lol! Welcome to Day 20 of our 30 Day Perfectly Imperfect Self-Care Challenge. Our diets don’t have to be perfect. In fact, it’s healthier if it’s not perfect, because intense discipline is just not sustainable or enjoyable. However, there are foods that can work FOR you to flush out toxins from your body. For example, avo

On Day 21 we continue to focus on simple ways to add more health consciousness to our diet. Ever heard the phrase, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade?” Well, lemonade requires way too much sugar, so let’s give lemons the stand alone respect they deserve! Lemons are packed with vitamin C, which boosts our immune system and helps iron absorption, aidin

Day 22 have you feeling “blue” that our 30 Day Challenge is almost over? Don’t worry! There’s still a week left, and next we will dive into the last seed of self-care- exercise. However, we would be remiss if we didn’t first mention the blueberry as the powerful anti-oxidant and mood booster that it is. Blueberries also help to strengthen bones and preserve

Today, day 23 of our self-care challenge, we are moving onto the last of The Four Seeds of Self-Care- exercise. My exercise routine has varied quite a bit over the decades. Back in the 80’s, I rocked the high-cut leotards, and leg warmers for my aerobics classes. In the 90’s, it was running, and swimming. These days I love to walk, hike, swim, do yoga and ev

Our mindset about exercise is EVERYTHING. I have talked myself out of exercising many times, so I know because I know. When I remind myself WHY I workout I am more likely to hush those self-sabbotaging thoughts. When I remember that I CHOOSE whether I remain strong and flexible as I age I am able to call BS on myself and get going! . . . Today’s Inspiration

We are much more likely to do something when we are held accountable. We are also more likely to do something that we enjoy! In my mid-thirties I used to run quite a bit. Getting up early in the morning to run a 5K race was a real thrill because of the collective energy of the group. I loved running as the sun was rising and taking in all of the beauty aroun

In case you missed our last episode of Community Connects: The Four Seeds of Self-Care, our guest, Sandy Geisel, spoke with us about endurance running and adventure racing. She shared how she never ran a day in her life until she was 30, but some friends convinced her to do her first 5k. She ran and walked it and after finishing the race she was hooked! She

Since I grew up in South Florida I have always loved spending time outdoors. As a child, I swam, fished, and rode my bike everywhere. These days I love to hike and go paddleboarding. Our June retreat starts at the lake with a paddle session and I often hear people say, “I’ve never paddle boarded before. I can’t balance. I’ll never be able to do that.” My res

Today we finish our week of focusing on our perfectly imperfect exercise routines! I have practiced yoga on and off for the past twenty years. What I love about yoga is that it immediately connects you back to the body. I say back to the body, because we often find ourselves on autopilot, running around and unaware of the signals our bodies are trying to sen

Today we conclude our 30 Day Perfectly Imperfect Self-Care Challenge! The goal for this challenge, and well, all of our challenges, is to improve upon our self-care habits and to give ourselves permission to #beselfcentered! When we accept that we are imperfect we can move on without the guilt and shame that perpetuates choices that don’t support our highest

Tell me you’re an artist without telling me you’re an artist... It’s been a hot minute since I’ve been in touch with my creative side. In the past week or more I’ve been getting angel signs to go back to something I once loved that brings me joy. Today I’ve been very in my energy and fully being pulled into my creative energy. I must say I am very excited
