Right now we're seeing many young birds passing through the area, newly independent of their parents but not quite ready for their long journey south yet. They will spend time molting into

An update from our BIC (Bander-In-Charge), Philip Mercier: “This time of year we are nearing the end of breeding season, therefore what we are starting to see are dispersing juveniles and molt migrants. Dispersing juveniles are birds that were born away from the individual MAPS stations that make their way into our area and then get banded. Birds like the

With much of our seabird monitoring drawing to an end, a break in the sunny weather has made it feel rather autumnal on Dream Island. The first juvenile Cuckoos of the year have arrived, one of which was found feeding on the abundant Small Tortoiseshell caterpillars amongst the nettles along the Lighthouse Track. It was fascinating to watch as it, rather clu

We had a great Storm Petrel ringing session last night, going well into the early hours of this morning - ringing these tiny seabirds is always such a highlight of the season! In just over 4 hours we caught 298 birds, including 21 retraps. Stormies have to be up there with my favourite birds - they're just so tiny and fiesty, and amazingly hardy! It's mad t

The perfect pair! These American Goldfinch’s were banded during the MAPS program our team participated in this summer. Interesting facts about the species: - the American Goldfinch moults its feathers twice per year (late winter, and again in late summer) - they breed late in the year (usually between July and September), which is believed to be attribute
